Greg Garra, DO MHA

Dr. Gregory Garra is a board-certified Attending Physician in Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Southside Hospital, where he is an Associate Chair of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Garra is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/ Northwell and an Assistant Medical Director for the Center of Emergency Medical Services at Northwell. He graduated from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, went on to complete his residency at the Morristown Medical Center and his Fellowship at the Jacobi Medical Center. He later earned a Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from Stony Brook University and is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Emergency Physicians.


Dr. Garra is a former EM Residency Program Director at Stony Brook University Medical Center where he was responsible for the oversight of the didactic and clinical education of 30 EM residents. Later, he conceived, organized and chaired a 90-minute didactic session on Educational Challenges for Training in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the 2004 Society of Academic Emergency Medicine annual meeting, where he is also an abstract reviewer. He is former editor-in-chief for PEPID, an emergency medicine PDA-based informational database, where he is currently a senior editor. In total, he has published 17 peer-reviewed publications, 9 of which were first-author publications, 35 research abstracts, and nine book chapters. For this, he has been invited to speak at multiple venues ranging from institutional grand rounds to international meetings.

Dr. Garra is a member on multiple Emergency Medicine professional organizations, Chaired the education planning committee for the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine, and served multiple terms on the planning committee for the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine. He’s a member of a rapid response working group assigned to write a response to the 2006 Institute of Medicine’s report on Emergency Care for Children: Growing Pains and held an elected position on the Board of Directors for the New York Chapter of the American College of Emergency Medicine from 2004 to 2007 and was an elected member of the state chapter council from 2003 to 2007.
