Hello to all,
With the weather turning warm, and our kids ending the school year, I want to focus on physical health. Obesity in our country has more than doubled in the past two decades. There are actually more overweight adults in the U.S., than normal weight adults. Media plays a big role in the rise of obesity, in adults and in children. The cell phone generation is much more sedentary than generations prior to cell phones. Cell phones and television contribute to inactivity. T.V. has also been shown to increase snacking. The food ads on T.V. are more commonly for snacks with a large number of sugars, fats and high sodium. TV watching in fact leads to small increases in calorie intake. An excess of 50 kilocalories a day results in a five-pound weight gain per year. One can of soda a day results in a fifteen-pound weight gain in a year. That's astounding! Let's disconnect from the T.V. and the i-phones( even i-phone watches) , get outside and get moving! In addition, let's get our kids moving too! Childhood obesity is linked to obesity in adulthood. Let's decrease our intake of the JUNK that advertisers show us in the media, and increase our intake of water, fruits and vegetables. Not only will you feel better, you will be protecting your family from obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, and metabolic issues like diabetes, in the present and in the future.
*Keep an eye out for news about "A Day of Embrace" on June 23, 2022 - a celebration of peace, acceptance, and to raise our voices about gun safety.
Stay Safe! Have a great week!
Best,
Dr. Heidi Levine
